Default Turbo for VVT-I

Already searched high and low, saw lex luthor's thread from '03, just wanted to know if anyone else out there has boosted their 2J VVT-I's. If so, what kind of power can be expected, where is a safe level to keep it at, what do folks use to tune it, etc....Im looking to run anywhere from 350-400whp, probably on the 350 side. Thanks in advance! Please don't flame!

I'm paying close attention as well, for my future VVTi project. There seem to be plenty of good results out there.

One of the things I'm investigating is to simply use a 1JZGTE or 2JZGTE ECU on the 2jzge VVTI. The VVTi 2jzge is the only one that has the proper sensor locations to do such a conversion.

If you are/convert to 5 speed, it opens up your options a bit more.

if you do use the vvti gte engine ecu, you still need the auto transmission cause it is computer controlled. also our ignition system is wasted spark, not coil on plug like the gtes are. so you need the full ignition setup from a gte also.
but for 350-400hp is no problem with the stock ecu with a piggy back and tranny as long as you dont beat on it too often and drive it conservatively. personally on my 98 im going with map ecu2 as a piggy back, since it seems to have the best controls out there ive seen compared to what the is300 guys are using. the is300 guys have basically what we have, so does the 98up gs300 guys. so if you look at them for some in sight.
what the is300 guys love using is the greddy e-manage ultimate, e-manage blue, aem f/ic, haltec fx10, and im not sure what else. ive installed, tuned, and played with all these units, and did not really like any of them much. i am sort of biased towards a full stand-alone though. i have yet to mess with the map ecu2 systems yet. so i will try that and if i dont like it, i will go to motec like my civic and my camry. the only reason why i dont want to go stand alone with the sc is because i want to retain my cruise, abs, and trac.

I want to say in clubna-t they had some talk about this. Everywhere I read about the 2jz-ge vvti going to be boosted is to change over the pistons and rods. According to some of the reading I have done the materials they used for the rods and or pistons are softer than the non vvti ge's. With the power goal of 350 hp I would hope not to see any issues with the rods and pistons.

well for simplest setup i would suggest going with a good na-t turbo kit from any of the kits from ets, sp, phr, or boost logic. and if you get the kit that does not have a piggy back, get some sort of piggy back and larger injectors.

You might also check out the 2GS forum as they are more likely to have turbo VVTI motors running around.

i have a vvt-i as well.lex luther did his a long time ago.im sure times where different then.but now from what i hear its easier to do.all the IS guys boost and the GS guys.from what i learned all we need to change is the pistons off a GTE.that the rods are the same.then we can use a GTE head gasket.arp head bolts.we can use GTE injectors.and i hear a stand alone is best to fine tune everything.and have control over everything timing, fuel.i know of a few IS's that are using aem systems.just do alot of homework.and good luck man.

actually its the opposite....the pistons are fine its the rods that are the weakest link and need to be swapped out to tt rods or ge non-vvti rods.
