Question for those Original 5 speed owners ...
Hey guys, hoping this is the proper forum to post this in. I have an original 5 speed. There is this stopper as we all know that prevents us from accidentally shifting into 1st when going from 2nd to 3rd. Lately, when I shift into first, even with the clutch all the way down to the floor and the car at a standstill, it makes some strange noise, almost as if the gear is grinding but not quite just some resistance, I haven't even started accelerating, just putting the gear into 1st. Has this happened to anyone else? Its been happening more and more lately, I'm thinking it might be the clutch needing to be changed, but can it be transmission fluid being bad? I changed it about 10k miles ago.

first gear syncro grinding. it may be starting to wear out. i have this problem too. what i do is go into 2nd gear first and then into 1st.
1. try adjustible the clutch. it may not be fully disengaging.
2. change your trans fluid with some penzoil synchromesh fluid
3. get a new shifter seat and pivot ball with one form Marvin crawler. stock is good. MC is better and cheaper. totally changes the feel of the shifter. that is if yours is loose and sloppy.
test the clutch. rev to 4K and bump the clutch. if it does a nice burnout your clutch is fine
if it just revs and smells like skunk ***** then its slipping and you need a new one

93sc3005sp you are correct. it has a "lockout" feature so you dont accidentally shift into 1st when going into 3rd.
With the clutch in try putting it into second then first when coming to a stop or at a stop. it usually helps it slide into 1 easier.

Changed the trans fluid today with some Royal Purple Max Gear 75w90, seemed to do the trick but ... we'll see since it's only been a day. What I absolutely HATE is when there's a red light, and you brake to 5-10 mph the light turns green, and you can't shift into 1st so you have to lug on through in 2nd or risk grinding the gear

before going into first try letting go of the clutch in neutral and then clutch in to go into first. I have this problem when i coast downhill going at highspeeds so I need to align the syncros by going into 4th first before I go into 5th. and for your situation at the lights going at low speeds try bringing up the rpms a little to match the speed before you shift it into first.
