Default turbo debate

once i get all my bodywork done, it will be time for a turbo, turbo kits have gone up a bit, and im just starting to consider going with a 1jz swap, ive been doing a lot of searching and debating on what i wanted to do as far as a turbo since i bought my sc, i already have a 5 spd but its a little worn 2nd gear synchro has seen better days, my 2j has 170 000 and when i took the valve covers off it was cleaner than a whistle in their and runs great[compression test 2morrow], my question is what would be easiest to do and cheapest, note: this car is going to be my dd to school aka lots of stop and go, so i actually am leaning toward and auto 1j,my goal is to have a realible dd with a decent chunk of power
all input appreciated
