Default Should I repair or rebuild my tranny before boost

See post #11 for my new situation

Ok, my auto tranny has 192k miles on it and it has a rear main seal leak. The average quote to fix it is between $300-$500.

I got a quote from a tranny specific shop and they said they can replace the leaking seal, as well as all other seals/valves or whatever is in there (basically a rebuild) for $700-$750 including tax.

My question is: Is it worth putting this kind of money into an old auto tranny in order to have the peace of mind while boosting? I plan on starting out at 320whp and moving up to around 400whp with a tranny cooler.

I've looked into it but I think I'll keep it auto for my DD. Maybe in the future if I want to break 450+ I'll just buy a 5spd sc and swap in a R154.

IMO you should start planning and saving for a replacment of your stock auto. Your tranny will not last long at all under boost. If you plan to keep it auto, you might want to consider a Built auto.

+1 on what Gadget said .Its not worth rebiulding .You can use a supra tt transmission but will need a standalone ecu .( suprastick or somemething similar). A cheap way will be a soarer tt autobox, its said to be good Good for about 400-450 hp.

I'm gunna take it to a reputable tranny shop next week to get a quote on just the labor for a 5spd R154 swap. This is a big decision so I'm gunna take my time.

Why not get a 1jz auto tranny and swap that in? I heard that they are better than the 2jzge trannys. I'm sure you can buy one for next to nothing. If you were in texas, I would sell you mine from my swap motorset for next to nothing. I'm sure there are tons there in Florida.

So what does it take to install the 1jz auto tranny?

so will a 1J tranny bolt up to a 2J???.... My tranny have 92K miles and I have been told to just take it to a recommended tranny shop and get a shift kit installed. But I am not sure what the shift kit consists of. My power goal a similar to yours so well see I guess I would say just rebuild.... GL

I know they bolt up, don't know what else it would take. I have a 5 speed, so couldn't tell you. I bet if you do a search you will find answers!

Wow, I found this thread while searching over my new dilemma.

My new SC is 5spd and has bad syncros so shifting into second is rough. I'm wondering if I should buy the drifmotion rebuild kit since the tranny only has 52k miles on it, OR should I just spend the extra coin and go R154... I only want to run ~350whp on this car so I don't think I really NEED the R154.
