sc300 manual tranny removal?
Hey guys,
Just a few questions for those with experience removing the tranny on an SC3. This is my first attempt on this car and would like some input and tips.
I've removed the driveshaft, dropped the exhaust, and removed/repositioned the center console. I've loosen most of the bolts but am still awaiting a 3/8 swivel to access the top 2 17mm bolts and the top 14mm bolt holding the starter in place. I'm sure I'll have to dismount the hydraulic clutch from somewhere and am not sure if it is necessary to remove the gear selector (guidance within these areas would be appreciated).
So this is what I've done so far, is there anything I'm missing? Thanks again

remove the 12mm bolts holding the slave cylinder in place, and put it to the side so you don't have to bleed the clutch again. The shifter should be taken out so you don't mess it up in removal.
After removing all bolts, slide the tranny out, and if you're working under the car, you can have it on your chest, it's not super heavy.

Sounds like you've gotten quite a bit done. The top bolts are always a pain. You can remove them with an extension that is about 3 ft long. Once those are off and the tranny mount is unbolted the rest should be cake. The tricky part is trying to install the tranny because everything has to line up perfectly otherwise the spline shaft will not slide through.

Yeah, I used a swivel extension to get those top bolts.
I got all bolts off and the starter off, however I'm having trouble dislodging the tranny from the motor, any suggestions?

ahh i had the same problem. be careful with the splines. but it might be easy with the drive shaft off, and just carefully jack it up and down while pushing it out, might expect some tanny fluid leak out. good luck!

I got it off finally just needed some loving.
The whole reason I removed it is to check out the release bearing, but from what I can tell its fine.
I'm getting this kind of clattering sound. It especially comes when shifting in a gear, but once in it goes way. For example, if I hold down the clutch and kind of push the stick towards 2nd gear, not going in gear, it makes a clattering sound. Also, when @ idle you hear a clattering whirling sound and when you step on the clutch the sound disappears. Any thoughts? Thanks again,

EDIT: I'm going to pull it out and chuckle it and see if it mikes sounds or if its loose. I'll keep you guys posted.

I don't know, it all seems fine to me. What do you think?
If it comes down to it. I'm just going to buy a clutch kit with the release bearing and replace the whole thing.

It all sits well together. Does not seem as if there is any play when its all attached. The fork moves a lot itself. Is it suppose to be able to move in all directions?
I removed the fork and the ball where it sits in is this silver pasty stuff (grease perhaps). I saw some rust as well. Where can I find more of this pasty stuff? Anyone know what kind of grease it may be?

Yeah, I'm thinking about replacing the whole thing, but if I could just spend less than $25 to fix that sound I'd be glad to do so. However, if I do decide to get a clutch kit, are there any available for less than $120?

If you are local in socal I can drop by and take a look at it for you and help you diagnose the problem.
Don't put that thing back in without a new throwout bearing, though.
