Default Suddenly lost 4 cylinders??

I was on my way home doing just 35 running smoothly when I stepped on it a bit to go to 45 the car suddenly lost power like half of the V8 suddenly died. I slowed down then I heard the usual sounds you hear whenever you turn off the engine (like ticking sounds from underneath the car which is normal when you turn off) but I still had the car running at 15mph at that point and that's how fast I went for 2 miles til I reached my house. It did not die on me. Popped the hood and all belts were fine, it's just idling lower than usual and felt like I only had 4 cylinders firing. Now I heard about coils going bad that can cause it, but I want to get very clear on it before I start tinkering with it tomorrow. Anybody had the same problem? 1993 SC400 btw. Thanks.

Igniter/Coil

same problem, easy fix. Happened the WEEK i bought the car lol.

Best way to test is unplug one of the ignitor/coils.

1) Start car.

2) Does it start?

Yes? Go to 3. // No? Then the one you unpluged is the GOOD coil

3) Plug that one back in and unplug the other

4) Does it start?

No? Then the one you just unplugged is the GOOD coil. //// Yes - sorry, I dont know, keep looking.

Thanks RedP, saw your reply to the other post too and that's where I got the idea that the coil might be the culprit. Hope it's that and not the other dude who went through 7 shops to get his sc fixed.

Removed LH side ignition coil (side near battery) car started then died. So the RH side IC is good I assume? I'll put back LH side then pull out RH side now.

Ran out of time, will do other side tomorrow. RedP, the car started but died in 2 secs, that means the side I did not remove is good right? Thanks.

Im not sure if the car should start or not.

however, the one that you pulled (battery side) is good.

try the other side however.

Thanks Gaz. Need to find out which side I need first, but it also might be a good idea to have a spare laying around. I'll find out first tomorrow then give you a call and hope Al's available this weekend so I can pick up.

Problem solved. It was the LH ignition coil. Dropped by Gazi's boy Al in MD and Gaz hooked me up with both coils + other goodies I needed. All 8 pistons back up and firing like nothing happened. Awesome deal Gaz, keep up the good work, we appreciate it fully!

Oh thanks to RedP too for the old school diagnostic test, who needs codes??
