97 SC300 w/Tach Adapter - Question - Wiring Diagram Attached
Has anyone installed a JDM ECU with their 97+ SC300 and actually got the tach to function?
I made an attempt to install the MSD 8920 tach adapter under the dash with this setup:
Car (Lt Green ECU Side) -> MSD Input (White)
MSD Output (Purple) -> Car (Lt Green Cluster Side)
Yellow (spliced before gauge cluster) -> MSD (Red)
White/Black (spliced before gauge cluster) -> MSD (Black)
Just curious if anyone else has done this successfully. I am thinking that somehow there is no tach signal coming through.
I have attached the Gauge Cluster wiring diagram if anyone can help me out, maybe I was reading something wrong.

Is it working yet? if not....
i been looking at the attachment you provided and i have a question.
Do you have a MSD ignition box or Just the MSD 8920 tach adapter?
You might need one, or may not. the attachment i've added shows them using a MSD ign. box and the output wire going to it. not to the cluster as you've put.
is the attachment i've added the instructions that came with your MSD 8920?
it shows in my attachment that the Output is the White wire and the Trigger (likely input) is the Purple/Violet wire.
You must also figure out if the tach is Voltage triggered or Current triggered.
from what i read on my attach. i believe the car uses a Voltage trigger.
In your attachment The lil pic of the tach in the center of the large blue area On Page 2 has a line/wire going straight through it and then another coming off the side to the bottom/negative side (b/c the power sorce is at the top). This is why i believe it is a voltage trigger.
Your red wire on the MSD side may be attached wrong too, as it shows in my attachment the MSD red wire going to the ignition wires not the tach power wire/yellow. i know power should be power but it might help.
Hope this helps
Oh, is your attachment for a 97+ SC as well?
and were did you get it from?
thanks

USAF_RT:
Try switching your purple/white wires on the MSD tach adapter and powering it off the ignition wire (should be black/orange). I made the mistake of reversing the wires on my setup and had no tach. Switched them and now it works fine. This was on a 93 SC300 w/USDM harness/auto Supra ECU.
