Default Alternator problems, not necessarily related to psp?

So my car died today, kinda scary, it did the whole bouncing gauges and dimming lights etc.
Managed to drive it home after replacing the battery...
The thing is I haven't experienced loss of power steering, or loud whining
I was trying to check whether my alternator is wet but cant seem to locate it (help plz).
So im hoping this is not a power steering related problem, i mean it is possible that the alternator jus happened to crap out?

if the lights dimmed and the car died it sounds like the altenator it is on the left below the distributor. it is a common thing i've read and actually expierienced the o ring for the distributor goes bad and leaks oil on the alternator.
