Default Budget Cold air intake

Well Instead of paying 200$ for a intake I thought I would make my own I found one on Ebay for a late model GS and with some elbow grease this is what I got.

What I got
The red line on the Left is the tubing needs to be cut (ignore the one on the Right)

A part for the GS MAF bracket that was left which I cut off and ground down.

Disassembly

MAF adapter and coupler(i used 2 couplers) I bought form PepBoys

Intake tube Assembly

MAF adapter Assembly(i had to drill 4 hole in the adapter so i could bolt it to my MAF)

All put together

The intake cost me 35$
Stuff from pepboys 30$

The ebay user i bought it from is mqtautoparts <great guy

hmmmm check the filtering quality of that "filter"
just for kicks i ordered an ebay filter. WHen i got it it looked cool until i looked closer and found it was only a very fine metal mesh. Theory goes if you can see through it, it probably wont filter too well.

otherwise good work on the DIY.

I did check it looked decent but I plan to get a longer K&N Filter anyway.

Nice job. That shallow curve on the piping concerns me, though. It hardly makes it past the strut housing.

Also, what do you have in mind to actually make it a cold air intake? I'd like to see what you can come up with for a shield for the filter.

I've been trying to find a simple solution to replace that intake piping, and this looks like a pretty clean solution.

yeah what Deruvian said, not a cold air intake like your thread titles, at least not yet hopefully. Good work so far, id say just buy some more piping and route it right under the headlight to go into the bumper like i did. The thread i posted up is around here somewhere....

Looks clean though and good way to take the initiative and build your own intake

Tnx for the compliments

deruvian: the curve is a little shallow but the MAF lines it up

xirforever: one of the things im contemplating for cold air is relocating my filter to the bumper but I have a couple of other options, the one i like the best for now is this.

Itll probably work just as good, just so much more R&D, if you have the time and the desire, more power to you. If you put a shield infront of the filter while its in the bumper, youll be A OK also

Yeah anything with a rubber base causes too much flow resistance and alot of the generic stuff from ebay is usually not that good. But you did a really great job on the install. Im pretty sure your intake setup will make good friends with your future K&N filter. Great Job!

Anybody know how this compares to the BFI? I'm assuming this is better becuase the filter is bigger. How noisy is it compared to stock? The BFI didn't make a difference at all to me for sound it seems.

I'm trying to do research on anything that might make my car noiser as when I had my exhaust done I used some of the muffler shop's generic mufflers and while it sounds nice, the noise resonates throughout the car and vibrates it WAY more than my friend's SC300 exhaust, and we both have the same general setup.
