One more set of photos for dashboard speaker upgrade. As it's not about subwoofer, I don't think it's good fit for the subwoofer mega-thread.
I don't use surround and left the factory one in the middle as it doesn't make difference for music then.
In retrospect I would probably need to remove excessive sponge sheet below the speakers, as it sounded a bit muffled at first until I added more treble.
I saw some post about 3" factory grille opening being a problem with 4" speaker. I don't think it's, as:
1. The replacement is coaxial, and the tweeter is much smaller than the opening, so i doesn't matter for treble.
2. By Huygens-Fresnel principle, diffraction dominates anyway when opening is below wavelength, i.e. frequency below some 4-7 kHz. Which is around tweeter-woofer crossover frequency. So in practice it doesn't matter for bass, you would only get some extra diffraction mid-range. But 4" has 78% more cone area than 3", and it matters more IMHO.
Materials:
JL Audio (TM) C2-400X 2-Way 4" (manual here). Some $144 new from eBay reseller.
No-name neoprene sponge sheet with adhesive, 1/8" thick, $8.
No-name neoprene sponge sheet with adhesive, 1/2" thick, $12. May be unnecessary.
Metra(TM) Speaker Harness for Toyota, 72-8109, $10. Or you can cut factory wire and use crimp tool if you have it, to attach standard connectors and avoid excessively long wires.
Great write-up and documentation. What are your listening impressions after the upgrade? What improved in terms of staging, imaging, tonal balance or low-end response? Did you notice any compromises or drawbacks compared to the OEM setup?
What made you choose these specific drivers?
I assume your car is not equipped with the ML audio system.
And once again — excellent photo documentation and very clean execution.
Thank you so much for the feedback.
Yes it's not ML car. I didn't listen to any other speakers, just picked what others say fits physically and sounds ok.
I don't feel like a qualified audiophile to go into description of how it sounds, it's way too subjective IMHO. Neither I do have any equipment to measure results objectively, and it's above my pay grade really. But sure it must sound better after investing my money and time😉.
