Default Extended warranty

I'll be picking up my first Lexus soon - a 2026 NX450h+. What do you folks think of extended warranties? I generally keep my cars for 7-10 years, far past the warranty period. Do any of the Lexus offerings make any sense to purchase?

I purchased an extra year of warranty when I bought my car back in 2022. I'm up for 4 years owning the car very soon, but the ECP in Canada does offer 3 years of maintenance as part of the ECP. At this point, I haven't done any repairs outside of maintenance and warranty work. I think 7-10 years shouldn't be a problem with the NX.

You get 4 years of factory warranty

I always buy 2 years worth of Platinum extended warranty on all my vehicles. And in every case. I’ve had repairs done to the vehicles that far exceeded the cost of the warranty

But it depends on the risk you’re willing to accept. And that really depends on what your vehicle has

Example, do you have a panoramic sunroof? Those are not cheap to repair. Same with the infotainment screen and system

Thanks. Do you buy the warranty from the dealer at the time you purchase the car? Or does it pay to shop around at different dealers? With other car brands I've found a wide disparity of pricing for the same warranty product. Not sure if that's the same with Lexus.

7 years of ownership here and very problem-free, other than a recall here or there. However, since yours is a hybrid plug-in, I'd lean towards opting for the warranty. That technology is unpredictable and less proven than your typical ICE lexus/toyota. Just read the fine print and make sure all that stuff is covered. Like wheel and tire "warranties", which if you read the boilerplate, cover practically nothing.

By my math first year of current generation NX came out in 2022 so if you own one of these you're only at 3 years of ownership maybe 4 if you bought in very late 2021, not 7 years.

I got my 350h in December 2021. The faulty DCM and front struts (there was a weird knocking sound in the front, though it’s still not completely resolved) were replaced under warranty. I ended up buying the Platinum warranty for another 7 years just to be safe. To me, the new NX feels less reliable compared to the IS I previously owned, even though my NX was Japan-built.

Pricing is different, depending on who you purchase it from

You don’t need to purchase the warranty when you buy the car. You just have to buy it before the original 4 year warranty expires

Thanks for the replies. Couple quick questions. I'm assuming that the official Lexus-branded Platinum warranty is preferable to something from Assurant or another third party company? I've had those third party ones before, and they always seem to want the repair person to use inferior parts or lower-cost labor. It's been a pain. If I opt for the Lexus Platinum warranty, does that problem go away?

Also, can anyone suggest a reasonable price to expect for a 7-year Platinum warranty for a 2026 NX450h+?

Start calling around. And see what they are charging. I bought all of my warranties from Jerry

Thanks for the referral. Is that a Toyota dealership? Do they sell Lexus-branded warranties too? Or did you purchase a third-party variety?

I've called a couple places, but there are obviously a lot of Lexus dealerships and I'm just choosing them randomly. It really helps to have the names of some that others have had success with. Much appreciated.

I believe it is a Toyota dealership. I purchased a platinum warranty for my wife’s Prius and I purchased the same type of warranties for three different Lexus vehicles, all from Jerry.

I never had any trouble getting our cars serviced under warranty at the dealer.

For me, the most important thing was to ensure that I was buying a Lexus warranty, not a third-party warranty.

Good luck!

I have the 10yr/100K Platinum since I wanted to keep this NX til then. Go with OEM Lexus. IMO, I think the vehicle start having issues around 7-8 years. Read the details on the coverage since it doesn't cover everything.

You don't have to purchase it at the dealer on the same day purchasing the vehicle. You can get the extended warranty before the 4 years basic warranty expires.

If you aren't in CA, go with Jerry.

Jerry indicated he can't sell in CA and another state.

Thanks for all the info - very helpful. I have calls and emails in to Jerry and hopefully I'll connect soon.

I totally agree with getting a Lexus-branded warranty. From what I've read, people have been successful at getting repairs without too much hassle, which isn't always the case with third party ones.

One more question: With the Lexus extended warranty, can repairs be performed at a non-Lexus facility? For example, if I have my car in at a local mechanic shop for a a routine oil change and they notice something, can they make repairs and be covered by the warranty, or would I need to take it to a dealership?
