WARNING: Superglue on Windshield Crack
I put this in my other thread looking for tips on who to have repair a small chip in the windshield. I didn’t see anything negative about using superglue to temp stop a crack from spreading, so here’s what happened to me, don’t want it to happen to anyone else. A $150 mobile repair cost turned into a $1500 SAFELITE (if they can find an OEM) or $3300 dealership windshield replacement:
⚠️ WARNING ⚠️ I had to wait until Monday to get the chip fixed. I read multiple places where putting superglue on the chip can help prevent a crack from spreading (it wasn’t, I was just trying to do the right thing). I put a drop of glue on the chip Saturday night because I had to drive for hours and I didn’t want and cracks to spread. (More than six inch cracks and they won’t fix the chip). Welp, SAFELITE came today to repair the chip and they said they can’t BECAUSE I PUT SUPERGLUE ON IT!!!!!! It’s considered “tampered with” and the superglue prevents their repair material from fully getting into the cracks!!!!!!! FU—!!!!!!!!!!!!
Now I I have no choice but to replace the entire windshield

One reason for the added expense for windshield replacements is sensor and scanner recallibration. It may be worth the cost of having the dealer replace it as they have all of the sensor callibration tools.
right now, California. Do you mean insurance paid for it? I only have a $1000 deductible, and my rate would probably go up if I used it, so I’m probably out $1500 for a drop of crazy glue. I could just let the chip run it’s course until it cracks to the point of needing the immediate replacement, but there is a shortage of NX windshields, so I don’t want to gamble with having to park it for weeks waiting for a replacement. The dealers have them for $3300, but SAFELITE doesn’t and has to order and hope it comes within a week.

SAFELITE includes recalibration in the replacement cost. They also replace the wipers and add a “rain guard” film to the windshield. Is there a practical difference in quality of care between SAFELITE and the dealer? I’m about to find out. I know to make sure the SAFELITE tech people are aware how fragile the dashboard is. I don’t want to see scratches afterwards.

NX450Guy, why would you immediately decide to replace the windshield. You have two good options. Contact a few local glass companies, they may agree to repair the crack even with the previous super glue. Or do it yourself, buy a repair kit. Why just throw in the towel so quickly? But by the way, thank you so much for coming on here and warning people. I would have never thought using superglue would keep a glass company for attempting a repair.
Superglue and windshield repair chemicals are somewhat similar, both are typically some kind of acrylic resin. If you put superglue into a windshield crack its going to prevent the windshield repair resin from flowing into the crack, so I can understand why they would not want to touch it.
Some info I found:

If you have a HUD option on your car the windshield will have a reflective coating added in it, I think it's either on the inner surface or built into the film found in the centre core of windshield which provides the safety element so that it wont shatter and send bits of glass all over you in a crash. Now this film encased within the 2 separate laminated panes of glass, if exposed with moisture as in from a small crack, will start the glass to delaminate and make things worse plus harder to see through.
If the crack is not in your line of sight and doesn't bother you I would maybe do a self repair properly with a kit found at any auto parts store. And begin the process of deciding if you want to replace it or not. As with most owners a car is purchased to use not to store, and continuing to drive may or may not make things worse, you never know. I personally had a chip happen in the winter months, drove directly to a glass shop to get a chip repair done that very day it happened. Well, they drove it into the warm shop bay and watched it 'come alive!' and crack all the way across from left to right! Thermal shock on the windshield did it in!
Here in Ontario Canada, most newer policies won't offer free windshield replacements, or may hold you to a $1,000 deductible. In this province we are required to bend over and take it up the you know where, especially with high theft rates as of last few years. My rate has gone up over 20% and I'm 59 with no tickets.
These are probably $20 or less:
