question, after a year of ownership recently discovered the passenger side view mirror doesn't have the none reflective film. it doesn't show on picture so I will try to explain this. mostly upper models have protective film on side view mirror to prevent light reflecting on your eye. my 2025 350h premium has one on the driver side but not on the passenger side. is this normal? I don't ever recall not having on both side of the side view mirror. is this an example of "short" supply issue?
Driver side mirror has a film to dim the reflection of vehicles behind you. This is required because the driver side mirror is flat, hence reflects light with same intensity as oncoming beam. Passenger side mirror is convex, so it dims the reflection as it spreads the oncoming beam over a wide spherical angle. Basic physics.
Please note it is not a film of any kind it is within the mirror material itself. It is an auto dimming type mirror found only on drivers side, not on passenger's. They did this with the RX too I believe, cost savings.
They use to have it on both side's with the older RX. The convex design doesn't preclude the ability to offer auto dimming, the convex passenger mirror use to be auto dimming as well on RX.
Here's one of several threads found on this forum:
Yup, Passenger side does not have auto dim feature. All my other Lexus vehicles have it on both sides. Seems like Lexus removed that feature. Although, i really do not notice any glare at night when i drive. One less thing to go wrong and an example of shrinkflation. I also noticed in later models the auto dimming mirrors now have a visible border. This is probably to maintain a good seal for the dimming medium to prevent breakdown that was seen on the mid 2000's Lexus Rear View Auto Dimming Mirrors
