Default Lexus NX Wheel Bolt Issues

Anyone on here have issues with the lug bolts, especially the key? I live in Canada and have salty streets in the winter and I just broke my key for the key lug bolts from being too tight. Went to Lexus and they broke theirs too trying to get it off. I see that there appears to be some corrosion happening on the bolt heads and the threads on other bolts. Any one else seen or experienced similar issues? Really un-acceptable as my 2013 Camry lugs and my 2019 Tacomas lug nuts all look like new still.

My lug bolts do have rust on mine, but I have not had issues with the dealer getting them off after 3 years of owning my vehicle and after 3 winters.

You are not alone — here’s a previous thread with issues in rust:

You can get some caps that go over the bolts and cover them, I know it is just a band-aid and not a solution to the problem, but they will somewhat protect your bolts form outside elements at least.

Thanks for the reply and interesting. We had our NX for three years as well and haven't had issues before. But this year all of them seem to have been corroded in some way. Will see what the dealerships says

Yea I agree, I'm not a fan of covering the lugs as it will also hold moisture if it was to get in. Like you said, it is a bandaid fix.

Thanks!

Totally agree, these bolts are sooo cheap! Corrosion occurs at first sign of salty roads in winter. I've long since given up on those stupid wheel locks, they cause more headaches that I care to remember. Replaced all my vehicles with standard bolts / nuts and did away with them.

I have a set of winter wheels and tires I swap out and use a second set of chrome plated bolts that work on my winter rims. I store my factory cheapo black bolts over the winter months so as to avoid corrosion. So far so good but I can clearly see the black coating has been damaged by use already.

Here's Lexus part number for factory bolts in Canada that are relatively cheap at currently only $4.89 CDN! a piece. Can buy them directly from dealer parts counter. I wouldn't bother with plastic caps, they'll trap in moisture. They haven't spent a penny more on these factory bolts than needed, the coating is a cheap black oxide coating that is quickly penetrated when a tightening of the bolt by a wrench occurs!
