I completely agree with your observation. It’s noteworthy that the Toyota Camry, RAV4, and Sienna all utilize the same engine, while the Lexus NX and RX also share the same exact engine, with the exception of the P810 motor. However, the specifics of the motor don’t justify why Lexus recommends premium 91 octane fuel.

On a related note, I’ve been using 91 octane for the past year, during which I've driven 12,000 miles and filled up 258 gallons (per my Fuelly logs), totaling $1,150, with an average fuel economy of 45 MPG. I switched to regular 87 octane as matter of fact today and will monitor my savings and any differences in performance and fuel economy, aiming to maintain the same driving habits and conditions. I will report back next year. Stay tuned.

Quite the contrary, Lexus should be incented to show the lowest annual maintenace cost possible. So I figure I should at least hedge my bets on this octane issue and do so by blending equal amounts of 87 octane and 93 octane for 90 octane. At today's fuel prices and assuming I put 10,000 miles per year on my NX 350h along with 39 mpg, my hedge costs me $128 and 5 minutes of my time per year. I can live with that.
Is it Boxwood ?

YMMV,

I drive pretty easily but only get 35-36 mpg, but my main corridor always goes 75-80 mph. Speed hurts mileage, especially above 65 mph - but use low performace octane

YMMV,

@Freds430 , Only a million miles of driving. Some other people might have actually have been driving longer than you

Peace and good driving
