To me the thick ones don't look terrible and probably are better protection that the PPF ones, but they do scream "welcome to the 80s". They should include a roll of sticky wood grain film for the rest of the side of the car.
Well I just got a text from my auto detailer. The door edge guards are off and everything looks perfect. I gave him the removal instructions but I don't know if that is what he followed. I'm just happy them ugly guards are gone and no paint problems at all.
So... we picked up our brand new 2024 450h+ on Monday. Just so folks know, at least on this model the 'Door Edge Guard' option for $155 is not the thin 3M film that was pictured earlier and that I expected. It is actually quite a bit thicker. See photo below. I'm not disappointed necessarily but if I had a choice, I would not go for these. They disrupt the clean surface of the sides and from an aerodynamic point of view they're essentially trip strips to mess with the air flow... a bit more drag and maybe even noise (I know... very small, but still). Thought I'd share.
Thanks for the photos, was going to order from Bell Lexus on sale, but I think going to try the tape. This is better protection than than tape, but to bulky. I have the tape on two other vehicles & works pretty god. I'm always careful when I open door.
Not sure if this is a smart idea, other than a good money grab for the dealers. Keep in mind you have a rubber seal on the front doors that provide a nice thump when you close them but also reduce wind noise in the cabin. The seal is a bit fragile I would say, as it's meant to just put pressure on door lip and B pillar to make a good seal. Adding the thickness of this door edge guard is most likely gonna 'work' on that seal overtime and maybe it'll tear prematurely and maybe not do as good a job at sealing wind noise.
I would definitely rather go with clear and thin PPF instead.
