Gas Smell inside while driving !?!
Hey guys .. so this morning my wife and I left for work..
About 5 mins in, she calls me to tell me that her car smells like gas.
We pull over so i can check it out and when i opened the passenger door and stuck my head in, sure enough, it smelled of gas.
I immediately opened the back hatch to air out and check if maybe I left anything in there. Nope
I opened the gas latch and checked the cap.. tight
I stuck my nose in each side airvent (i just remembered in didn't check in the middle ones, da*^%it) and cupped it with my hands to only smell the air coming out the vent. Clean air smell
I opened the hood.. no gas smell
Doing all of this released pretty much all of the gas smell.
We drove off telling her i will post here and more down the road she said she kiiinda smells it..
I just dont know if its lingering from before
She got to work 10mins later and says "its better"
But i will check when we get home after work.
My question is.. what the h3ll happened??
2015 NX200t, base, 28K
Nothing changed.. Same type of gas, same driving habits (normal), same temp, same humidity.. just another day
We have the maintenance message up but that has been up for a while now as we are so busy in our lives that we cant make it to the dealer but i might go this weekend. I know i shouldn't ignore it, but i mostly read that its more of Oil Change message and its nothing EXTREMELY concerning .. but i'll take it soon

based on my experience with turbo bmw's and since you have a first model year turbo NX i suspect fuel injector o rings going bad or fuel injector line leak. They are hard to reproduce and may happen sporadically. Once consistent dealer will fix under warranty due to lexus 6 year power train coverage. Watch for stains in garage floor , lower than normal mileage and gas smell only when starting after being parked for a while..
I would check the ground underneath the car for gas puddles after it have been sitting overnight and after you idle it for an hour or so. It would be a fuel injector leak like the previous poster said or a leak in your gas tank vent vapor system. A leak resulting in a puddle of gas underneath the car can be very dangerous, do no take this lightly.
Yes, gas puddles under the car. In such case, that vehicle would have been aflame long ago.
Usual culprits are EVAP system. Charcoal canister overflow or getting contaminated. Then it starts emitting strong petrol odor. If you had fuel cap removed, you might have simply released fumes build up.
Personally, if it ever happens again, I'd not drive that car. Thing is, you can toss lit cigarette into bucket of petrol and it will not flame it. But should you have air petrol FUMES mixture, that' explodes from the lightest spark or open flame. That's why half empty gas canisters inside a vehicle are ticking bombs.
