Default I Screwed Up!!

So, I picked up my Atomic Silver 2019 NX F Sport AWD last night from the dealership and absolutely love it. Coming from a Toyota Tacoma, this thing is way more fun to say the least. Plus it is WAAYYY more comfortable. Now comes the BAD part!

I tint windows for a living and have tinted probably 15 or so NX's before. never had one issue...until today. The 2018-2019 models come with a UV/IR cut rate coating on 2 front doors from the factory and you can't clean them with a razor blade like you can a traditional window. Well, I sprayed my solution and grabbed my razor to scrape the windows like I always do and Voila! I ruined the driver's front door! I was so pissed off and sick on my stomach at the same time. my car was less than 12 hours old at that time. It was my own fault and I take full blame. but now because I am severely OCD I am going to have to replace the glass. got a quick quote from my dealer already...$600-700 including labor. which made me even sicker!

anyway, just wanted to share and vent. Cheers!

Damn that sucks! There's a few other posts around here of people having similar issues. Is it only the front windows or do all of them have the coating? Knowing what you know now, what would you recommend for prepping these windows for tint to not damage the coating?

It is only the 2 front door windows with the coating. the small triangle windows in the front are not coated, they are traditional glass like the back.

as for recommendations on tinting them, I used my tint solution (water and dish soap) and simply sprayed it and wiped the window down. then squeegeed the window clean like normal. I tinted the rest of the car, except the driver's side.

I have been researching and it appears you can dry scrape the coating off, saving yourself some money from replacing it. I may try that tomorrow if I get time.

the worst part is, I usually do illegal tint on my vehicles, because I can just pull it off each year for inspection. but, with this vehicle once you tint it, you ain't getting the film off like normal. so this one will be legal for NC. oh well, I digress.

I would try to salvage it. I wouldn't bother with replacing the glass.

And even if so, you can DIY that sucker in half an hour. Especially if you tint windows for a living, you already know how to remove door panels. That's such a job for a toddler, seriously. Why even bother asking a dealer.

Also if a window is new, or even just clean, you don't have to razor the window. that's overkill. And yes I have tinting experience. you just spray your soapy solution (slip solution) and place the pre cut tint, peel the liner, stick and wipe.

you'd only razor if you had tint previously.

Got the coating off this morning and tinted it with no problem. It took about 40 mins to scrape it off. you have to scrape this coating dry, no slip solution. went thru about 15 blades. this stuff actually smokes as it comes off. I am sure it is probably hazardous and shouldn't be inhaled.

we don't remove door panels in our shop to tint windows with the exception of the 2nd Gen IS sedans.

when tinting windows even on new cars we always use a new razor blade and slip solution. even though the window is new, they come from the factory with all kinds of stuff built up on them. so simply wiping them down won't always work.

but at any rate, my issue is resolved now.
