It is now been 2 weeks since I took delivery of my 2018 NX300 F sport3 and I checked the 3-bean LED headlight operation on a recent trip and noticed that they not only auto-level but they also steer! I cant find any documentation on these headlights and I am not sure if they steer at all speeds or just low speed. Any one knows?

 

On the pre-2018's the fog lights have a cornering light feature. I'm not sure this changed for the 2018's?

 

my 18 has the foglight feature when turning and when put in reverse they both come on...

 

That's correct, the flog lights are also used as cornering lights. However, the Headlights appear to steer, which is very noticeable at low speed when projecting on a wall.

 

page 172 of the Owner's Manual:

AFS (Adaptive Front-lighting System)
secures excellent visibility at intersections
and on curves by automatically
adjusting the direction of the light axis
of the headlights according to vehicle
speed and the degree of the tire’s angle
as controlled by steering input.

AFS operates at speeds of 6 mph (10 km/
h) or higher.

 

Yep that's what AFS is on the Triple beam headlights. Fairly standard with modern luxury cars that get updated headlights. Bi-xenon/led...etc.

It's a nice feature. I always did bi-xenon retro fits on our previous cars and on our Mercedes. Mercedes from the factory has AFS on their upgraded bi-xenon but I never thought nor really had a high desire for it. Then driving my wife's' NX I was like this is nice... Makes driving safer too as you aren't straining to see a blind spot in the corner since the beams turn and illuminate the curve more of a road. I always wondered on life though... how long is the expected life of all the components that turn..etc. IE: I'm so used to normal headlights without all the moving parts it's nice because they tend to just work/last compared to something that is way more involved and moves all the time. When it breaks it's going to be $$$...lol
The triple beam led headlights look sooooooooo nice compared to the single projector. It really changes the entire front end of the vehicle.

Had this feature on my '06 RX....in the 11 years I owned the car it never gave me a problem.

Agree with your statement about triple-beams, they really change the front end look on the NX.

I feel this way about the '17 F-Sport wheels too...had to have them!

 

How much is the triple beam option? Is it any brighter than the regular LED headlights?

INTELLIGENT ADAPTIVE FRONT-LIGHTING SYSTEM (AFS) CONTROL

Headlight Swivel Motor LH and RH:
Driven by the headlight light control ECU sub-assembly, the LH and RH headlight swivel motor moves the low beam to vary its angle calculated by the headlight light control ECU sub-assembly.

(a) Low Speed Control
The headlight ECU sub-assembly performs low speed control when all of the following conditions are met:
Engine is running.
Vehicle is moving forward at a speed of 10 km/h (6 mph) or more.
Vehicle is moving forward at a speed of less than 30 km/h (19 mph).
Steering angle is 6° or more.
Low beam headlights are on.

Swivel Angle Range:
(Right Turn) Left beam: 0° fixed; Right beam: 0° to 15° to Right
(Left Turn) Left beam: 0° to 15° to Left; Right beam: 0° Fixed

(b) Medium-to-High Speed Control
The headlight ECU sub-assembly performs medium-to-high speed control when all of the following conditions are met:
Engine is running.
Vehicle is moving forward at a speed of 30 km/h (19 mph) or more.
Steering angle is 7.5° or more.
Low beam headlights are on.

Swivel Angle Range:
(Right Turn) Left beam: 0° Fixed; Right beam: 0° to 10° to Right
(Left Turn) Left beam: 0° to 10° to Left; Right beam: 0° Fixed

(c) Operation Stop Condition
The headlight ECU sub-assembly stops performing control when any of the following conditions is met:
Engine is stopped.
Vehicle is moving forward at a speed of less than 5 km/h (3 mph).
Steering angle is less than 7.5°.
Low beam headlights are off.
Shift lever in R or N.

 

Triple-Beam LED Headlamps with AFS are $1515 and require

Comfort Package "CP" or Luxury Package "LL" or Premium Package "PM"

or the F-Sport versions of these groups

 

That is quite a bit of money for a bit of improved corning light due to the adaptive headlights. Of course the triple looks a bit better but I think I will pass for that price.
