Hey Gang, I have a new one for you. Just got a call from my wife that on her way to work, her sun roof shattered. Don't know if the 2 weeks of -20 celsius weather had anything to do with it. Service advisor suggested it must have gotten clipped by a rock and in the frigid temperatures, shattered.
This is the first I heard of this so hopefully it will be covered under warranty.
I picked up the car this morning from my wife's office and took it to our Lexus dealership. I expected the entire sun roof to be shattered but that wasn't the case.
I don't think she even heard it when it happened as we keep the sun shade pulled. She just noticed increased wind noise and saw the damage when she got to work.
So to answer your questions, no, she wasn't shook up and it didn't scare her. But wow was she upset once she saw that. Tears etc. This is her baby.
The Service Mgr had indicated that Lexus hasn't covered any of these sun roof failures that he has seen. Lexus Canada blames it on a rock hitting the sun roof. Not out of the realm of possibilities, but I sure would like to see Lexus Canada step up.

I doubt Lexus would replace it under warranty, most likely something hit it just right. But depending on the cost and your insurance deductible, it may be cheaper to make a claim. They usually don't raise rates for something like this.
Typocl, you are correct. Lexus wil not replace it under warranty. Cost to replace is about $840. We will look into our insurance deductible and make a decision on tha. Think I went with a higher deductible to reduce premium, so likely isn't worth the hassle with insurance. But will investigate regardless.
A quick search in the IS forum and I couldn't find it. I could have sworn I saw a couple of IS (and/or ES) owners with the same "sudden shatter" issue with their sunroofs, over the years. It's not impossible but difficult to prove unfortunately.

I'm surprised the sunroof doesn't cost more than $840 to replace to be honest. I've heard of sunroofs mysteriously shattering in other vehicles before too but I'm inclined to think that something hit them just right. Stress-induced breakage would be incredibly difficult to prove.
With the way insurance works in Alberta, it's probably better in the long-term for your premiums to just pay it out of pocket.
