Default Gas Tank question

This may seem like odd question/discovery. I filled up my tank yesterday, and when I put the gas pump nozzle into the NX the gas tank inlet was moving as if it was loose a little. I could move it side to side. Is that normal? I have never had that with any other car that I have owned. Is it perhaps flexible to help against expanding and contracting?

+1, normal just like the rubber mounts used to support the exhaust to purposely allow for some play.

Great, thank you for the reassurance. I have never owned a Lexus, and in every other vehicle I have had, the gas intake was firmly in place. It is kind of a scary feeling when you are not used to it.

I think that's just an NX thing...

Agreed. I don't notice the wiggle in my IS.

Maybe I will ask the service dept next time I'm there.

Same rubber surround on the '13 ES--lets it move around slightly. See posts there:

My NX does the same thing. Also sloshes around when near full. Very weird and not something I've had with any other car. However, it doesn't bother me too much.

Perhaps an educated guess here, but it's possible the rubber gasket is installed to allow for play (energy dispersion) in the unlikely event of someone driving off with the fuel pump nozzle still inserted.

PS, my IS also has a rubber gasket.
