Had my windows tinted yesterday.

I only did the front windows. I got 35% put on and it was only $80. they did the job in less than an hour and it looks pretty good.

will post pics once I get back from lunch.

before and after...unfortunately the lighting is different in the two pics, otherwise you'd see a starker difference.

Do NX owners usually tint only the front driver and passenger windows since all the rear windows are factory privacy glass?

How does the privacy glass alone perform in respect to blocking heat and uv rays?

I'm debating tinting the front windows only, or tinting all the windows. My concern is performance first, appearance second. I generally prefer all the windows to look the same and I'm not a fan of the limo look in the back and lighter tint in the front.

For reference, I have Formula One Pinnacle 30% all the way around on my ISF.

At this point, I'm considering 30% up front and maybe something a little lighter in the rear to keep the appearance the same but add more protection. Any suggestions?

For the 3IS and possibly for the NX since they look identical, the normal glass is at 70% for allowing light and 99% for rejecting UV. The privacy glass is at 35% for light and 99% for UV. It does not do a very good job on heat rejection, but helps a little.

Most aftermarket dyed tint is good for rejecting light and even thought they advertise 99% UV rejection, it doesn't really help the factory glass that already does that. Ceramic and Metallic tints add heat rejection properties to the tint, either by filtering Infra Red light (the major contributor to heat) or by reflecting a wide spectrum of light (including the IR light) back out the car. Each one has pros and cons, and a search on Google will have plenty of hits on them.

Personally, I preferred the Ceramic as it didn't act as a one way mirror and didn't impact radio signals. There is also the possibility that since the tint is installed inside the glass, reflecting the heat back out through the glass would increase the likelihood to shatter. At this latitude, I don't think this would be an issue for 360 days out of 365.

For my NX, I am going to tint the front windows only with a carbon based black tint. I have 20% on my Camaro and wouldn't want any lighter. I had 35% on my genesis coupe and I thought in bright sun, it was almost useless.

Based on the pictures above, I am going to use 20% on the NX as well, as it appears that the 35% is just a tick too light in direct sun light. I'll let my tint guy decide for sure, but that is my plan. I wouldn't risk tinting other windows over because then you can end up with a haze layer between the factory tint and the secondary tint that might not end up like you want. Stacking tint is never an exact science.

So if I'm reading that correctly, the factory glass in the rear has a film on the inside of it already?

I was under the impression the factory glass was "smoked" that way without actually applying a film like conventional tint is done.

Factory glass is chemically treated with a coating.

Option 1: 35% DigiTint from the dealer all the way around. FREE

Option 2: 30% Formula 1 Pinnacle all the way around. $341

Option 3: 30% Formula 1 Pinnacle up front. 80% Llumar Air 80 on the rears. $341

Can anyone else speak to the quality of the dealer tint, specifically DigiTint? Online reviews weren't that great but I couldn't imagine a Lexus dealer using trash for a film with as many luxury vehicles that they move every month.

Are you leasing or buying the car. If leasing, without intent to buy back, get the free option. If buying, I'd stick with brand name stuff. DigiTint is more like a service (plotter and inventory tracking or pre-cut to dealers) where they source the film from who knows who or where and do not provide full specs on those. I guess you get what you pay for, specially when it's free.

A Lexus dealer is like any other dealer, they are in it for the margins. If they can move a car (specially a lease where the original buyer only cares about the first 3 years) by giving a "free" tint, they will do it. They know that at end of term, the car comes back and gets sucked into the used car inventory. In most cases, they won't even see that particular car themselves, LFS will recycle it through their own systems.

Default Tint Concern

Question to all of you that have tint on your windows.

Did you run into any issue with the felt on the window seal?

Twice now, my tinter has redone my windows, and little pieces of felt keep ending up in the tint. The felt along the window seal is just so thick, he wiped it down 10-15 times (in which each time turned the rag black), and I still have bubbles in my tint because felt snuck its way up the window.

Is anyone else having this problem? If so, what did your tinter do? My tinter suggested taking the door panel apart and I wasn't interested in that at all.

Both of my cars are tinted and no problem like you described. Same with previous cars with tint. I agree with you to avoid removing the door panels.

Its only this car I've seen this happen with. All of my other cars (non-Lexus) are perfect.

Does you tinter use computer cut film or hand trim it? Might be a stretch, but if the film is trimmed by hand he might be able to cut it so the film is just a bit further away from the felt stuff. Computer cut might be too precise.

All by hand. The problem is that as the window is moved to set the tint, the felt cracks off and gets onto the window surface.

In looking at the IS, it doesn't appear to have felt as thick as the NX does.

Its a very odd situation. My Camaro has little to no felt in the windows (cost savings I'm sure GM.... ) so this is the first I've ever seen of this. Its making me lose a little trust in my tinter and might go elsewhere for the IS and whatever my next sports car is....which is looking more and more like a R35.
