So, both my wife and I have NAV systems in our cars now, but they are DVD based, and we both own Toyota's. We are very close, hopefully, to getting my wife her NX 300h with NAV system in it. I know this is now on a SD card and not DVD based, but my question is how often are the maps updated and can you do it on your own or do you just purchase the new SD card from Lexus?

Map updates are released once a year, in the fall (November as I recall). This site is super helpful in understanding what to order, and how to install them.

Yes, you will be able to purchase a new SD card from Lexus Parts Dept for the update.

It's the easiest update process ever as you just swap out the old for the new!

Updates usually come out every Nov/Dec

The card will mate to the car and is non swapable....

 

Do you know if it's possible to insert the SD card into a computer and make a working backup (for that vehicle)?

I work in IT and it worries me to not have a backup of that. I can't try, as I'm still waiting to get an NX with my specs...
