Well I know I'm going to get some heat for this...
So I do the service (oil changes, brakes, rotors, wipers) on my wife's NX. Never had any issues with anything but recently I started hearing this noise from the engine bay almost like when a heat shield is knocking or rattling. I got under there and replaced the spark plugs because those we're a bit overdue and it did not fix the issue. The noise is still there. Then I noticed that the rattle kind of came from the turbo area. I then noticed that this reservoir was completely empty and read this is to cool off the turbo. I freaked! How did I miss this all this time? I swear I can't think of how it's looked the last few times I was under there. I filled it up immediately but noise is still there. Seems a bit less but still there. What do I do? Any advise? Did I fry the turbo? Car turns on fine and runs but if you step on it a little almost sounds like there is bearings in there. (is it the actual bearings?)
First off, the picture of the coolant reservoir in your post is the one for the engine block. The turbo intercooler reservoir is the small one in front of the engine. You may very well have a coolant leak (water pump is a common leak point) and should investigate. Take a look for dry pink coolant underneath the water pump pulley.
As for the noise you’re hearing, the turbo is a possibility but to me it sounds more like a loose heat shield over the exhaust manifold. When running the car, place pressure on the heat shield to see if it goes away.

Thank you for your reply. See, that makes sense to me but everything I was finding was saying that was to the intercooler. But ok, if that's the one for the engine block and it was super empty, it would have overheated right? It's been running fine and gauge where it needs to be. Could it have made damage to the engine block without some kind of warning from the system?
The temp gauge on the cluster would show the temp in the overheat range if it had overheated. It wouldn’t have necessarily overheated if the reservoir was empty, as there may have been sufficient coolant in the engine block and radiator.
Just for info...Correct me if I 'm wrong but...the small reservoir is for the heat exchange intercooler, that is for the air intake of the turbo. The turbo must be oil cooled I think.

Just wanted to come back and give you all an update. I ended up taking the car to Lexus and it turned out that the rattling sound was the water pump. The noise you hear on the video is the bearings inside I was told. It is being repaired as we speak. Ended up costing me $1300 which is still a lot but I imagine it's less than if it had been the turbo components.

You stated that you did/do the "oil changes, brakes, rotors, wipers". How many miles on the vehicle? Have you ever changed the coolant in the radiator and intercooler?

The car has 122,000 miles. And no, had never done a flush. This is getting done with the water pump fix though.

Jeez they sure do charge a lot for that water pump. I bought the aisen oem water pump for $60 on rock auto and had the pump changed in an afternoon. Do you know if they changed anything else while they did your water pump? Accessory drive belt? Belt Tentioner?

They replaced the belt tensioner and belt with that price. I wish I had done it myself but looked like a big job. I'm also not good with bleeding the coolant system and all that.
