Default Pittsburgh to NYC route recommendation

I drove out to Pittsburgh on Friday in the rain from NYC. WOW was I-78 messed up. So much traffic with the weather the way it was and all that contruction... I was stuck on I-78 for 7 hours, normally taking 3.

Anyway, I am going to be traveling back to NYC on Tuesday. Can anybody tell me how I-80 is? Trying to find a better route with less traffic and construction. The miles and miles of construction on I-78 seems to be both on the east and west sections.

Any alternate recommendations are greatly appreciated. I was thinking of going I-80 straight into NYC.

I-78 is really bad in that one section between Allentown and Harrisburg because of construction. They really need to add another lane or restrict trucks on at least one of those lanes because they rip up the roads every year. I guess you took 376 - 76 - 81 - 78 or something like that?

I took route 80 once and it was about the same as I-76. There was construction areas limiting traffic to one lane only, but I drove through it at night. When I drove through it during the day, there was traffic near the Pocono area to the NJ state line.

Better off driving at night.

Oh well. Maybe I'll take I-76 straight into Philly then the NJ turnpike up to NYC... Just to avoid I-78. If I-80 is the same with all that construction, it won't be worth it. I know its a hike, but my girl lives there and I have to bring her some stuff. I'll be flying from now on...
