Default cool NYC restaurants

I'm visiting someone special in NYC and we're looking for new places to dine that will be memorable. I'm 34 and she's 22 and she has lived there for the past 4 years, I have only been to the city a few times so I have gotten all the touristy crap out of the way. She wants to try some places that shes never been to before. Looking for cool, funky, different, with good food obviously, great places to go on a date, but don't have to be expensive. I'm not opposed to dropping some cash, but its not a requirement. Not really into the whole snotty Upper East Side type stuff though.

So let the suggestions roll in!

Here are some places that I have been to recently that I thought were pretty good:

Alta:
Spanish Tapas, good bar, fireplace in back - good date place. Get the Brussel Sprouts!

Havana Alma de Cuba:
GREAT cuban food. Dark and dim. good date place.

Cafe Lalo:
Good desserts and sweets. Cafe scene from 'You've got mail' was shot there.

ChikaLicious Dessert Bar:
Another dessert place. Custom unique desserts made right in front of you. Very small place. usually really long wait. no reservations.

Alice's Tea Cup:
Tea and sandwhichs. Very cute - chicks will dig. Good place for brunch after late night of ..... w/e.

no type of food in particular, just places that offer a nice experience. We're staying in Midtown East, around Murray Hill.
