Default 2002 LX470 Noise

When going from Park to Drive I hear a clanking noise. I went underneath to view the front and rear drive shafts from transfer case to both front and rear differentials. I did this as someone went from park to drive. The rear drive shaft seemed not to move but the front drive shaft seemed to move about 20 deg before engagement. I'm going to put this up on a rack and need to go thru a process to narrow the cause, is it the transfer case, transmission, front diff or CV. This might be premature until I do put it on a rack but thought I would put this it out so I might save a little time in the diagnosis. Any help appreciated.
