Unhappy Steering wheel shakes!

The steering wheel of our 98 ES300 shakes when we drive over 60 miles per hour.
Does anyone have any idea what the problem may be?
If so, is it something easy enough to fix myself or is it a dealer service item?

Thanks in advance.

My guess is that it could be a wheel balancing problem, or a problem with the steering wheel mount. Start with the cheapest solution, and go a tire service facility to have your car's wheels rebalanced. If that doesn't seem to resolve the issue, check with a known mechanic about it.

We have fairly new tires on this vehicle. We replaced them about 3 months ago.
I know that tires may still be a possibility.

Had the same problem in my 98 GS 300. There is a factory fix, was just fine after same. See your dealer.

What is the factory fix you're talking about? I guess I'm not aware of it, but I heard long time ago that there was a recall notice on the ES (forgot which year) to retighten the steering wheel nut.

ya - i had the same notice about that steering wheel recall, i never got it done, but when the steering wheel started shaking - the dealer told me no such recall occurred - BULL****, i argued with them a while and they wouldnt do anything for me (for free anyway), so i had the wheels balanced and the front end alignment done (this temp fixed it), but its back and hopefully another dealership which is knowledgable about the recall will do it for me

This was back in 98, when I purchased the GS 300 new. I complained about the shake, service department found a service bulletin on same, required a new chip of some sort, a few hours of work and the problem went away.Had nothing to do with steering wheel. As said, complain strongly to your service rep. Good luck.
