Got rid of the 55-65 mph steering wheel vibration!
Hello all. I have a 98 GS 300 with about 95k, just had the 90k service done last November. I bought this car used with 42k in Jan 2002. I've had the infamous steering wheel shake for most of the life of the car, even with factory wheels and tires.
I've tried several different sets of rims, several alignments even on a Hunter machine, several sets of new tires, balanced upteen times, all without fixing the problem. It would get better for a week or so after a new balance, but never went completely away.
When I had the 90k service done, I had them adjust the steering wheel pretensior. Slighly helped, but the problem was still there.
Last week I was ready to sell my car; I'd had enough. It was a chilly morning and shaking really annoyingly. I found the thread about getting the upper and lower control arm bushings replaced, so I took a leap of faith and had them replaced by the Germain Lexus dealer.
BINGO! Problem solved! I drove all the way back to the office @ 62 MPH just because I COULD. Smooth as glass up to 85, which is all the faster I took it.
The fix: $99 Daizen control arm bushings, both sides front, upper and lower. Basically every part in the "kit" replaced the old parts.
Cost: Around $875 bucks which included a front wheel alignment, plus the $99 bushings.
Worth every penny to me! Now I can drive the car with one finger!
If you live in Columbus, please contact Dave Huff @ Germain Lexus, and tell him Shawn sent you.
The end of a nightmare...

$875.00 with alignment is not that bad for Lexus dealer, i'm suprised that they decided to do it since most of them wont deal with aftermarket parts, ehh good for you
