Unhappy air conditioning on es300

My 1995 ES300 A/C is blowing hot air. I took it to an independent mechanic who thought it was the AC drier. No luck. Now I am being told that the A/C expansion valve (which is located in the dash) is the problem. I dont want to pay $700 and this doesnt work. I am in the process of selling this car. Any suggestions on what could be the problem?

does it blow cold the first few minutes? if you don't want to pay the $500 (shouldnt be $700), then sell the car w/o mentioning it...preferrably in the colder months though. its already june. you can do a search, you'll find the exact same situation you describe. i had it too in my 95ES. it IS the expansion valve, and there IS a dealer TSB on it.

thanks for the info. I took it to the dealership and indeed it was the expansion valve. They quoted me at $870 with 10% off parts and labor. I had thought about waiting until the colder months to have the work done. Other mechanics have quoted me a lower price, but I have had bad luck with anyone outside of the dealership working on my car.

What is dealer TSB? I am not familiar with the term?

TSB=Technical Service Bulletin

Sell it in the fall and don't mention the a/c issue
