Default check for codes

I have a ls400 1994 with 174000+ miles lately the engine light comes on and when i accelerate it moves real slow almost laboring till about 25-30mph. Very frustrating do i have to go to dealership to get the codes? Or does the car have a self diagnostics system. Any information on this problem would be appreciated thank you

I don't think it can self diagnose, but I do believe you can go to Autozone etc and they will pull codes for free.
