Do these things really work on keeping your settings with a battery change?

 

yes and no... they sometimes work in cars that always have power at the plug...

The accessory position would be needed if used.
I have this thing for years and never used it.Seemed like a good idea if it works but with today's electronics,I'd be nervous trying it without good reviews.
