Default PS Fluid

I need to add some ps fluid, and I bought some Mobil 1 synthetic ATF which is Dexron compatible and is what is recommended to add in my car (1993 Sc300). I was about to add it when I realized that the fluid in the reservoir is goldish in color like motor oil and not red like the ATF. My tranny oil in the tranny is red however. Any ideas on what I should add? Is the Mobil ATF ok to add?

I think your PS fluid needs to be flushed (ie replaced in total). My 1993 LS400 was the same. PS fluid looked like dirty motor oil. Do a search, there are some good posts on the topic. They have info on two filters that seem to sometimes be a problem, one in the pump, one in the rack. Also info in the service manual.

Default It OK

Herm is right. The PS fluid should be RED! Your is getting dirty already. If you leave it in longer, it will eventually change to black/brown like dirty motor oil. Dexron automatic fluid Mobil 1 synth. is Ok. I also use it in my car. By the way, if you have to add fluid then you may need to check out your PS system. You could have a leak, it's a common problem with earlier Lexus cars. As Herm said, to a search on PS. Good luck.

It actually looks like clean motor oil. It is golden in color. Doesn't look dirty at all. I actually took a pipette and sucked some out and it looks like brand new motor oil. What does Lexus use? Does Toyota type 4 atf look golden in color? I guess I will have to flush it and check it out.

I was using the Toyota PS fluid, until Honda Odysseys (240 hp) kept beating me on the Laredo-Mexico City highway, because I could not turn very well. Switched to Valvoline Synthetic PS fluid, and great results.

I know people who have put the Mobil 1 ATF into your type of car, and have not noticed a a gain in performance. However, I think the piece of mind taht goes with a synthetic product is always there.
