My 04 LS430 sometimes doesn't start. Same problem for the past few years. Happens once every few months. What happens...
Turn to ignition and everything seems fine. Normal lights, etc.
Turn to start, but nothing happens. Engine does not turn over. I don't hear a clicking sound from the starter either.
Usually if I try it a few more times, it will start. Sometimes, after trying for 10-20 times I have to come back later and try it again and it will start fine.
Definitely sucks... what really sucks is that if the shop can't reproduce the issue, all you may get will be a "best guess" diagnosis...
If it was mine, I'd probably carry my voltmeter with me so I could see if the starter is being told to start or not... the thing that makes me doubt starter (but still know its a possibility) is that it works normally all the time, except when it doesn't and then it doesn't make any noise at all - usually dying starters at least click...
the problem could also be in the ignition switch, a relay, etc, so many possibilities... It's times like this, you'd be better off if the starter just failed completely...
