Default oil

just took my car in for 15k service and gave em some 10w30 mobile 1 oil....they used it, but when i got back the service rep told me to use 5w30 next time.

but, when i took it in for my previous oil change, the tech told me to use 10w30...what are the pros and cons? ive been using 10w30 ever since i switched to synthetic (7k miles)

thanks.

mostly depend on where you live (ie the weather temp...)

but they are pretty much the same, 10W or 5w, do a search. no pros or cons between using one or another. I would stick with 5W, because it's the recomended one.

10w30 is a little thicker...Good for warm weather. Not for cold starts.

Banana's right 5w30 is recommended. Can't go wrong there.

The techs know a heck of a lot more than the service reps., that's for sure.

In a warm weather climate, if you were to stick with dino oils, 10w30 is the preferred choice.

5w30: more VI improvers (not a good thing), thins out quicker (some have found to a 20 weight after only a couple K)

10w30: more stable, better NOACk value, less prone to breaking down.

For synthetic, it's less of a concern. "A synthetic 10w30 flows better than a dino 5w30, so anytime a car calls for 5w30 you can substitute 10w30 synthetic in it's place."
