Default Transmission Filter, SC400

HOwdy! I'm new to Lexus and, of course, this forum. Looks like a really good place.

I just bought a 93 SC400 w/ 92K. Great car. I'm wondering if there is any advice on changing the filter in the auto tranny. Has anybody done this? Is the pan hard to get off? DO you need to get a new gasket? any advice would be appreciated.

Also, i'm trying to locate a good set of factory service manuals too. Thanks, Frank

The tranny filter is reusable, I believe it is a metal filter (I could be wrong). Yes you do need new gasket, but the pan should not be difficult to get off. Some Lexus dealers don't recommend cleaning the tranny filter, but you could ask them to do so. My dealership calls it the "major" transmission maintenance.

Default Fluid

If your tranny fluid is clear, pinkish-red and doesn't smell burnt, then forget about it, it and the filter will be fine.

The tranny filter is reusable. All you have to do is clean it with parts cleaner and use a new gasket to form a good seal when reinstalling it. They do sell new filters but even Lexus says it reuses your old one when it does a tranny service unless you insist on a new one but its a waste of money in my opinion. Of course different dealers will say different things but I asked my private mechanic who I trust and he said also that it doesn't pay to get a new one so he just reused my old one. Its a metal screen type filter that doesn't get worn down in anyway, shape or form.
