First Oil Change
I now have 3000 miles on the clock of my '02 IS300. The dealership and the manual recommend first oil change at 5000 miles. Is this adequate or does someone have another recommendation?

Follow the guidelines in the manual for whether to change your oil every 5000 or 7500 miles.
But if it makes you feel better to change it every 3000 miles, go for it.
But it's up to you whether to listen to the makers of the automobile or the people who make money off of you when you go in for an oil change (referring to the general 3000 mile recommendation by the quick lube industry).

I'm sure 5,000 miles would be just fine but considering that the price of oil change is a "change", for extra insurance and peace of mind, I'll do it sooner at 3,000 and again at 5,000. After that, every 5,000 should be fine. The first couple of thousand miles are the most critical than any other mileage history in your car.
