Default Gasoline 87 or 91?

hello all! Ive had my sc for 4 years now and ive always used 91 octane here in socal thats the highest we have. Anyways im a student and gas prices is starting to add up. I filled up with 87 last week and the car ran just the same if i had put 91. So my question is can i just use 87 or is that a bad idea?

It may have felt like it ran the same, but I assure you, it did not.

Lower octane in our relatively high compression motors means that there is a better chance for knock (detonation, pre-ignition). Once the car picks up on the fact that it has less than great fuel, it will pull ignition timing, reducing engine performance and fuel mileage both.

same as the higher octane fuel actually...

but for a naturally aspirated vehicle, you are better off just paying the extra 20 cents a gallon for premium... I don't know what meth injection kits run these days, but, its an added failure point for sure, and just one more thing to maintain...

ive always ran 91 on my vehicles. it just seems right for high performance vehicles to get the greatest octane. ive heard debates on how its beneficial to use the 91 here in so cal, but detractors say its just money gauging. i pay no attention. u guys use whatever gas you've run all your lives. there's no need to change all of the sudden simply because of another's perspective.

Just stick with the top tier gas like Chevron. In the long run it will do you better. No offense, if you think about it, you only save 2-3 dollars. Just think of putting better gas is part of your car's maintenance.
