Default Gasoline Smell in the Trunk

When I open the trunk on my '98 LS 400 I get this gasoline smell. It doesn't matter if tank is full or almost empty. It seems the longer it has been since the trunk lid has been opened the stronger the smell is. I have removed carpet, left trunk open all day in the sun, sprayed Fabreze, replaced gas cap, etc. Any suggestions?

Doesn't the filler tube go on the side of the trunk down into the tank... atleast on the GS it runs along the side... did you check that ?

If you can lift the car up try to look underneath the car. You will see 2 metal fitting(it will be hard to see, some model is on top of the diff.) that go into the gas tank sometimes those rubber o-rings worn out.
