I'll probably get bashed... Quaker State every 5,000 miles, with filter.
Unless you are running the engine hard, any SAE approved oil is going to do fine.
Oh, and my brother is a chemical engineer working with a major oil company. I take his advice over most, as he does have the actual degreee and the job experience.
Guess what he has told me to use?

I usually but the 5qt jugs of Mobil 1 fully synthetic (not EP) 5W-30 and change oil and filter every 5k miles. Haven't been able to get it at Walmart (and won't pay the price at Autozone), around here Walmart has signs up saying that recent hurricane weather in the gulf has delayed production and it should soon be in stock. Those signs have been up for three months now. Interestingly enough Mobil 1 mentions this on their website and is offering a $10 rebate on future purchases. here is the link.

I went with Castrol SynTech 5W-30 and haven't noticed any difference.

I also buy the 5qt jugs of Mobil 1 fully synthetic 5W-30 from Wal-Mart, filter kit from Toyota, and change oil and filter every 6-7k miles. For the winter here in Indiana, I subbed the 0W-30 Mobil 1. Been running Mobil 1 products ever since my 1972 Charger and never had a problem. Back then everyone warned you that it would leak out of every gasket - never had that problem. Always feel better when I start the car in 0 degree weather knowing the oil is flowing. Also use the Mobil 1 gear oil in the differentials and used the Mobil 1 grease in my previous vehicles like my Tundra where there were grease fittings.

Mobil 1 synthetic 5k or greater - no problem. May go with extended life and change every 10k mile. Also I am using a longer oil filter than oem (the best filter for the money). Purolator PL20195 PureONE Oil Filter <- it will fit if you have room. Oil filter is same price as the one listed below.

Otherwise, go safe with Purolator PL10241 PureONE Cheap on amazon.

Agree with the above comment. Walmart is where to get it + an extra quart.

Just bought my new 2008 IS 350 on Sunday. I'm coming from a 2004 Accord EXL 4 cyclinder and since 42k miles on that car (I'm now up to 125k), I started using Mobil 1. My manual for the Accord said you could already go 10k miles in between oil changes so I didn't push that any further - just kept the oil change intervals at 10k miles.

I'm not fully sure what's the best way to go for my new IS 350. I'll do some research.

Also, in my Accord, I had used 5W20 for the most part - but have used 5W30 here and there. I believe that's ok - matter of fact, I think I read 5w30 is better for older cars. The manual says to use 5W20.

I use Mobile 1 in everything I own. You don't have to change the oil as often as you think. I remember a guy that sent off some to be checked at a lab with 10,000 miles on it and it was still good. I won't trust using a filter that long.

i've been running mobil1 5w30 full synthetic on my ES and GX for a while now and no problem but i was debating between valvoline full synthetic vs. mobil1 full synthetic due to mobil1 price increase... but it's only extra $10... so i am keeping my mobil1
*it was mobil1 full synthetic oil/mobil1 EP oil filter(evey 7500miles) vs. valvoline full synthetic/genuine toyota filter(every 5000miles)*

My old school mechanic told me to stick with the same oil for the life of the engine. I'ts okay to switch to synthetic once the engine hits 50K but then stay with that same oil until it's all over.

there is nothing wrong with switching to different brand oil. In fact, many brands change their formula more so than not.

I'd never toss Mobil 1 5W30 in any vehicle given the current formulation, especially not in a non-NA vehicle.
I switched from M1 to Castrol in my 02 Altima and I could tell a difference.

With my 2004 Accord 4 cylinder in non-severe conditions, the manual itself says to change the oil every 10k miles and the oil filter every 20k miles. So the Honda OEM filter can go 20k miles in that Accord - this couldn't be doable w/ my 2008 IS 350?

I used Castrol Fully Synthetic also. Love the results. Change it every 3000 miles. Every time I drain it I check the oil level first to see if it burned oil and it does not at all! When oil is drained out after 3000 miles it's changes to brown only not black. Good stuff! High recommend!
