Default 92 SC400 A/C question????

My original 92 SC400 A/C compressor crapped out on me.....So I am installing a used compressor from a 1995 SC400 and switching over too r134 freon!

1.) Where is the Receiver/drier located on these cars. (I was told to replace this and found one at autozone for $30)

2.) Should I buy this O-ring kit?? http://www.autozone.com/N,15299999/s...rtsLanding.htm ???? ........If so, were do all these O-rings go?

are you intending on doing this yourself?

I cannot stress enough that if you do not know what you are doing, you are wasting your money buying the parts - it is not a simple install, fill, and go...

The link you posted does not work, so I do not know what o-rings it is talking about, but typically every pipe or hose connection in the system has an o-ring (or two even)...

off top of my head, I cannot tell you exactly where it is (though I remember it being close to the battery area)... it's easy to find though, follow the line coming from the A/C compressor - it goes to the condenser (in front of the radiator), then that line goes to the receiver drier, from the receiver drier it goes to the evaporator / thermostatic expansion valve (behind the dash), then back to the compressor...

if you do attempt doing all the work yourself, at least take it to an A/C shop and have them vacuum the system for 45 minutes to an hour, the charge the system with the correct amount (32 ounces if R-12, short fill 3-4 ounces for R134) Don't forget to add the appropriate amount of oil to the compressor, receiver drier, then the rest when filling the system...

I have read some threads on here of people using the cheap autozone kits and there ac works great in there sc400.

I noticed that my broken 92 sc400 a/c compressor has a low side freon connector on it while the 95 sc400 compressor does not have the low side freon connector .

Should I even worry about this or do I 100% need it. where is this fitting located on 1995+ sc400's??

I agree with mitsuguy and take the car to the a/c shop. You have to make sure the electrical connector is the same on both compressors first. If you look really hard you find another low side fitting in the system. The receiver/dryer is located under the driver side headlight.

where is the low side fitting on a 1992 Lexus sc400??

Is it a problem to install the compressor from the 1995 sc400 onto an 1992 sc400?

The electrical connections are the same........only difference is that the 1995 compressor that I will be installing does not have the fitting I pointed out!

Im determined to do this job myself because its not worth putting a ton of money into a car this old!

before I replace my compressor and drier should I have the system cleaned out with a machine??

Or should I put all the new parts on and then have it cleaned out??

I just do not want to ruin my new parts with gunk in the system!

there is no machine that does this...

what happened to the old compressor that makes it not work anymore?

if it just doesn't engage (clutch issue), then not much to worry about... if it wore itself out and blew up internally - thats a technical term - then the system should be flushed, specifically the condenser, but, realistically, everything should get caught by the receiver drier... (its hard to flush a condenser completely - flush chemical tends to migrate to the bottom, whereas contaminated particles can be anywhere in it...)

At first the clutch would move a little and appeared try to engage but would not.....just made a weird noise while trying.

Now when I turn on the A/C system........nothing happens......clutch doesnt even try to engage anymore.

One more thing........I did have a buddy at a local shop put some R134 freon in my R12 system last summer. I assume it was a horrible idea considering the R134 does not go with the mineral oil of the r12 system..................Should I have the system cleaned out or will replacing the drier be sufficient??

I always see people say Reciever/Drier, I have located a Drier at NAPA AUTO for $15 but what is the Reciever???

What O-Rings will I need inorder to do this job??

What I did when mine went out was just order a remanufactured one off of ebay. My father has worked with fridges before so he has the equipment to charge and remove freon/r134. We drained my old system, took the old compressor off, which was like a 5+ hour job, since we had never done it before, and basically put the new one on. The remanufactured one was already converted to r134, so all we did was hook it up, my dad got the proper tools and charged the system.

I agree though, if you have no experience in doing anything like this, take it to a shop. If my pops didn't know what he was doing, thats exactly what we would have done.

how do you access the expansion valve behind the dash, does the dash need to come out or can it be wiggled out from under? My 92 AC is not cooling either and the compressor seems fine. 50psi R134 at 1500 RPM.
