Default Hood struts

My 1990 LS400 hood does not stay up by itself. Appears one or both struts might need replacing.
Questions -
Must I go to the local dealer to buy new ones?
Is there an after market place?
Who knows the part # in English?
Does any other car strut fit the 1990 LS400?

Thanks, JD400

My dealer charged over $200.00:eek: but it was under warranty so didn't cost me anyhing I would suggest that you go to a junk yard or something.

To J A Hummer.
A concern I have going to a "junkyard" is, how would I know (after buying them) if they are any good? Remember, mine is a 1990.
Yours failed when they were still under warranty. Tell me the age of your Lexus. Thanks, JD400

It's a '97 w/65K miles, I bought the Lexus Platinum warranty with it so I have another year to go.

Anyhow, that did occur to me. Your hood should open itself once you release the lock.

If you can, test them. Hopefully you can save a lot of money.

Good luck.

Cool Hood Struts

I took the old ones off and went to discount auto with it. I found ones that are a 1/2 shorter. They cost $15 and they work great plus they have a lifetime warranty. The hood pops right up now. I had to cut off the old mounting bolts, but that was ok. I'll try to find the part number. They are mighty lift struts.

Cool

My LS400 is a 1991 which is the same as 1990-1994. I got the hood struts at Discount Auto Parts and the part number is 95029. Price $14.99 with lifetime warranty. Glad I could help.

Default Hood struts

There are no Discount Auto Parts stores here in NM. I went on the net, closest one, now known as Advance Auto parts (merged w/ D.A.P.) is in CO. For one each part #95029 , it costs $25.99. Can't tell if there is a shipping charge included. I will call long distance tomorrow to see if any different and to verify details.
Thanks again so far. JD400

This is a common problem with the SC400/300 as well, especially on the trunk lids.

www.RockAuto.com has the best price on them.

If you'll search the SC400/300 forum, you'll find several threads on this subject, including detailed, illustrated instructions for replacing them.
