Default transmission drain and fill question

I'm going to do a tranny drain and fill this weekend, should I also replace the transmission filter/pan? This is the 2nd part of my tuneup and I just want to know what the best way is to get the job done.

I also plan on doing a:
rear diff drain and fill
radiator drain and fill
serp belt
replace headlights
replace fuel filter and lines
replace thermostat

Sounds like an engine/performance question.

If this is the case, my Lexus dealer lied to me. Apparently "these aren't GM's - the filters don't need to be replaced. They are designed to last the life of the transmission." This is what the dealer told me. Can someone clear this up?

Lexus 400mn: I just had my ATF done and the difference is very noticable. Shifts are smoother and quicker. Sorry I don't have an answer to your question.

ok first off. Tranny filters are basicly just a mesh wire thing. so yea it doesnt really need to be replaced.. unless some HUGE chunk comes off your tranny.. n yea..

replacing the filter is a hassle tho. ive done it myself.. but its not hard.

the only hard part is dropping the pan.... since the old gasket is prolly stuck on from the heat and such.

but yea good luck!

just a tip.. use something to cut the old gasket off.

thats kinda like some of the VW's that NEVER need transmission fluid changed... there are some things that are better off just having done rather than listening to the dealer / manufacturer...

I would normally always recommend sticking to OE recommendations, but changing the filter is definitely not going to hurt anything, and while you are in there, it's not a bad idea to clean the magnet material stuck to the pan Plus, the filter is like $30 or so...

So how much silicon did you use to seal it back in? a ounce or so? Also how many quarts will I need of the type 4 fluid? 2-3 quarts?

I used 2.5 quarts on mine... no silicon at all though, just a dry gasket...

wth ghetto rig the tranny pan?

i believe all tranny filter kits come with the Gasket. well mine did.

so for quarts. 3 should be enough. because a drian and fill requires 2 bottles.. removing the pan releases a bit more fluid out so yea.

CHECK YOUR OWNERS MANUAL.

don't over fill your transmission....you'll blow out the seals with the pressure.
