Default Timing belt, when and how much?

Neither my 99 RX300, with 130k, nor my 93 LS400 with 130k have had timing belts replaced. (I know, I am probably being stupid). I'm assuming it's about time. What should this cost? Should I have a dealer do it or can a local guy do it? I'm about 60miles from the dealer.

Thanks,

bob

I think its around 90K when its recommended to replace the TB. You should probably have a shop do it because it seems pretty involved.

I let the shop do it along with water pump, front crank seal and cam seals. You will have to pay extra money for parts and labor. If the water pump or one of the seal leaks fluid then you will have to pay the shop the same among of labor to go back in and re do all whole thing again.

Dunno much about the RX300, but your LS400 is just barely broken in. Before doing anything, you might want to search these forums and see how long belts last- it's a lot longer than the conservative recommendations of Lexus.

You can easily check the condition of the belt by removing some of the covers. When I did so, my belt looked great, and my car is a year older than yours.

Do as you wish, but if you do some searching and reading on this forum, you'll see there are many of us who think the V8 belt is one the last things to worry about on our cars.

(VVT-i is right, though- once you eventually replace the belt, you may as well replace all those other parts as well once the engine is apart.)

Default 00' RX 300 timing belt time vs. mileage

The service manual calls to have the belt done at 90,000 miles OR 6-years. My truck has 49K on it but I'm up against time now with it being a 6-year old truck. It's obviously a time set for service based on a 15K avg. miles/year over 6 yrs = 90K, which is the logic here.

Any opinion on whether to let the clock go on it since the mileage is pretty low and also since I've heard here that it's a non-interfering belt?

Thanks.

Go with the mileage, not the years, you should be all right.

With the local guy, this should be under $1,000 USD without a doubt, and have them definitely change out that water pump.

Paid $305 at a Toyota shop for a timing belt and replaced the other belts on an ES300. They said to wait on the waterpump no sign of leaks and the bearing felt okay. (140,000 miles)

I got quoted for $900 to replace timing belt, water pump, tensioner, and all seals on a GS. This was from LMS.
