Just buy the timing betl kit & cam seals, other misc things if you want [like alternator belt/Power steering belt] from www.rockauto.com
I got a timing belt KIT [complete], cam seals, 12 sparkplugs [oem bosch], fuel filter and two alternator belts for 350$ shipped... All oem stuff, made by AISIN [which makes Toyota parts].

Are any special tools needed to replace a timing belt (2003 ES300, V6)? My Lexus dealership wants $2240 to complete a 60K mile check and replace the timing belt. Yikes! My car has 85,000 miles on it. I blew off the 60K mile check. Now, it is seriously time to do some preventive maintenance. I have a decent variety of tools. I also have enough repair experience to have a decent shot at successfully completing this maintenance. I replaced the timing chain on a 1978 Chrysler and did a ring job on an old Pontiac. I also routinely do routine maintenance like tune-ups and brake jobs. I plan to get the Chilton's online repair manual (one year subscription). What about adjusting the valves?

2001 Lexus ES 300
My Mother's Lexus ES 300 2001 has 37,500 miles on it (yes you read that correctly) She was a light driver, has not driven in 5 years, we have kept the car for when we are in town visiting (frequently). Mom passed in Oct and we plan to give the car to her best friend and caretaker. Lexus said it needs a new timing belt (every seven years) even this lady thought timing belts were a mileage thing. The point had been made that if the car is not driven frequently the rubber may wear out more quickly? Is a timing belt rubber?
Best friend is going to take it to her mechanic. Can a mechanic see the timing belt without taking anything apart? I was just in town for Christmas and the car drives and sounds like a thorough bred champion.
Anyone have any thoughts or insight into changing a timing belt on an 18 year old Lexus ES 300 with 37,500?
