Question

I am in the process of buying a new RX300. It will be a second car and have low annual mileage.
Is an extra maintanence package, $1300, to double the time length of the factory program worth it?

Allan,

Bet this one will be a controversial topic -- many pros and cons on both sides of the equation. For me, I didn't opt for the protection plan on with my '95 SC300 that has been babied with only 35K miles on it, or my '99 RX300 that has 30K allowing the SC to become "the second car" the past couple of years... Both autos have had appropriate oil/filter changes and preventative maintenance along the way. No major problems in either vehicle to date, and I'm not disappointed with my decision. The RX had it's passenger electrochromatic mirror replaced 4 times in the first 18 months, but it appears this last one has marked quality improvements -- other than that, zero problems to date on my RX. A great vehicle.

Now, to put a twist on everything I've said, I'm seriously thinking about buying the protection plan for my new SC430 when ever it arrives. I plan to have it as long as I have had the SC300, with a lot more mileage (couldn't put many miles on it going around an island in Hawaii the first few years I had it there). Now that I'm in Atlanta, and it seems I travel many miles to get anywhere, it appears to me with 10 motors taking care of that top and all the other gizmos the car has, something mechanically significant is bound to go wrong in the 5-7 year timeframe, even though I'll probably never quite get to 100K miles before the end of the 7th year.

The key decision factor I believe is primarialy any plans you have for significant mileage, but no matter what, you've got to keep that basic preventative maintenance up. If I were personally buying a replacement RX300 (maybe when the new model comes out in a couple of years?), I wouldn't do it given the quality of the vehicle and my past experience. I will be interested in the comments from the gang that I'm sure will be coming our way, and whatever your ultimate decision may be!
