my SC eats gas like an animal, any suggestions?
i got a 92 400 and i know they are suppose to have low gas milege, but mine eats gas like its free, im in ny so that doesn't help either, i spend $2.60/gallon. does anyone have any suggestions? also post some #'s of your car's gas milege
Tune up, tune up, tune up!!!! Plugs, wires, caps, rotors, oil, trans fluid, oil filter, gas filter, air filter. Do it, you'll be pleased.
Normal driving, which for me includes at least one pedal to the floor a day, and I still avg 18-19mpg. As low as 15-6 if I'm on it all the time. and as high as 23mpg if I baby it everwhere.
Also, I only use Super. I feel it's worth it for the better performance and increased gas mileage.

sorry for the ignorance but are all of those things components of a tune up? if i ask for a tune up in a mechanic shop, they will do all those things? or a tune up is differnet and i still need the plugs and wires?

I use Chevron 91 and if I'm doing highway driving, I get around 19+ mpg in my 95 SC4. And I'm pretty sure mine still needs to be taken in for a tune up...just gotta find time.
If you bring u'r car into a mechanics and ask for a tune up, they should give you a break down of what they include with their service...

Like cheungsta said, ask what they include. Or let them know what you want done.
the easiest is to do it yourself, like I did, and save a bundle!!

search for 'bad mpg' in the "Search the forums:". You'll find many posts on this. I just got my 2nd SC ('96 SC400) and have only filled up twice, but I'm getting 16-17MPG...I'm not beating the heck out of it, but that's pretty crappy with the gas prises for 93 Octane approaching $2.60 here in Chicago 'burbs.
I had a '92 SC400 about 5 yrs ago and remember getting about 18 - 20 MPG normal city driving (normal meaning full throttle only when necessary
That car had way less miles than my 'new' SC4 which has 92K but I'm going to take the advise of many here and buy the Iridium plugs:

I purchased form McGrath Lexus Chicago and know they did the oil change, trans fluid, and air filter, but 17 MPG stinks!!

I have a '92SC4, I average about 20MPG and 25HWY. I run mid-grade because not enough people buy premium and it can sit too long at the gas station and become "heavy", which does more harm than running regular. Also, pick a quality gas and a station thats busy (they get fresh fuel more often).
Change the air filter and plugs and stuff only if need be (If you know when they were changed last) Run a couple of bottles (2tanks) of injector cleaner DEFINATELY! Don't run too low of air pressure either in the tires......I am at 5200 ft. above sea level by the way.
I'm giving that AIR RAZOR a shot...ahh, what the heck, for 25 bucks I can't get hurt
I'll post results in mpg when I get them.

Those are gimmicks/scams. As long as there is an uninformed public, they will probably continue to mass produce them.
There are a million things that can cause bad gas mileage, from bad tires or psi, bad alignment, rubbing brakes, off timing, to more common things like bad spark plugs/wires or the fuel filter.
If your car is well maintained [all maint. is done on time], it is very easy to diagnose problems. However, I can almost gaurantee it is not considering you are suffering from this at all. May or may not be your fault, but it doesn't matter.
This is a rough list of what usually causes bad fuel mileage on otherwise healthy cars-
o2 sensors
air filter
spark plugs and or spark plug wires
distributor(s)
fuel filter
