Default Can I charge AC myself?

Can I charge the Air Conditioning system on my '93 LS400 myself. The air slowly got warmer and warmer, no there is not even cool air. I remember back the days you could buy a can and connect it to the AC system for a shot of coolant. Can that still be done?

Thanks

John

For a 93, sure! But I would fix the leak first.

for a 93 i believe you have to use r12 right??? i forget . but is it worth it to change the system to use r134 or should i just buy r12 and refill??? cause r12 is little $$$ but its colder then r134 plus 134 is lowerin price

You can't legally go out and buy R-12 - you need a license for it. It will continue be harder to get a hold of R-12 so I would just bite the bullet and do the 134 switch.

So can r12A be safely mixed with r134a?

My lex needs a refil, but I"m not sure how much r134a is already in the car...

If there is already 134a in the car, then continue to use it.

The answer is you Cannot Mix R-12 with R-134a. It's an A/C shop job with special tools and techniques needed. The R-134a pressures are a bit more exacting for proper cooling, meaning too much refrigerant may seem to act as not enough.

you cannot mix R-12 with R-134a BUT you can mix some of the R-12 Replacements (synthetic R-12) with both regular R-12 and R-123a.

Default Mexico

If you live in a South western state just drive over the border and pick some up at NAPA, R-12 is $15 in Mexico and $60+ in the US. They will even refill it for you, easy to do yourself though.

if you know how to work a gauge set, vaccum pump, and are confident with your mechanical skills, you can charge an AC system yourself. When I converted mine, i installed a new dryer, changed almost all the O-rings, added 9 oz of POE 100 oil, and took it to a AC shop for the evac/fill.

I believe 93 uses R134a as refrigerant. Check the sticker in the engine compartment to be sure.
