Can I charge AC myself?
Can I charge the Air Conditioning system on my '93 LS400 myself. The air slowly got warmer and warmer, no there is not even cool air. I remember back the days you could buy a can and connect it to the AC system for a shot of coolant. Can that still be done?
Thanks
John

fix the leak - that may not be easy
look into your auto parts store for r-12 replacement.
it goes under numerous trade names
and works fine. costs about $8 for a 9 ounce can
you need 33 ounces

The answer is you Cannot Mix R-12 with R-134a. It's an A/C shop job with special tools and techniques needed. The R-134a pressures are a bit more exacting for proper cooling, meaning too much refrigerant may seem to act as not enough.
If you live in a South western state just drive over the border and pick some up at NAPA, R-12 is $15 in Mexico and $60+ in the US. They will even refill it for you, easy to do yourself though.

if you know how to work a gauge set, vaccum pump, and are confident with your mechanical skills, you can charge an AC system yourself. When I converted mine, i installed a new dryer, changed almost all the O-rings, added 9 oz of POE 100 oil, and took it to a AC shop for the evac/fill.
