Default Transmission Fluid Question For A 02 GS300

I have a 2002 GS300 with 40,000 miles on it and I was curious if during my next service visit to my dealer if I should have the trans fluid changed. I took a look at it today and it looks like a dark Melot color. I did some research and I came up with that it should be done at 30,000 miles so I was kinda leaning towards doing it. But I just wanted to see if anyone else had any other thoughts on it? Also does anyone know what the dealer ussually charge to change the trans fluid? Thanks for any info

I am from Westchester NY. Yea I do infact I always change the oil myself but I am bringing the car in this week to have the rear brakes done so I firgured if it wasn't a lot I would just let them do it. Yea I know I saw bannasgs DIY on it and it seemed real simple. I was just curious if 40,000 miles was to soon? and what the cost would be? I would assume like under 60 dollars?

Cool

It wouldn't hurt to change the tranny fluid with the mileage you have on your GS. You probably only need a 'drain & fill' as opposed to a 100% fluid change.

I didn't know the difference. Thank You. I knew there was a such thing as a flush and I didn't want that so is that the same as a fluid change? So I would just ask for a drain and fill? Also is this kinda early to do but somewhere I read it should be done at 30,000 miles?

I would recommend having a Toyota dealer do the drain and fill rather than Lexus. Much cheaper, according to the folks here. I do my own every fifteen thousand, easier than an oil change. In any case, insure Toyota Type-IV is the only ATF fluid used. Toyota built ECT transmissions seem to last longer when the fluid is kept fresh.

I agree with Tammy to do only a drain & fill since the low mileage. The Toyota Type IV fluid is correct as well, with the exception of if you wanted to switch to a synthetic, you can use Amsoil synthetic ATF as it IS compatable with the Toyota fluid. Switching soon myself to that.

we recommend doing the fluid every 15,000 miles. The reason for this is because you are only replacing 2 quarts of fluid. In your case I would recommend doing a complete flush. You have about 10 quarts of fluid in the entire transmission. 2 new quarts will not really make a significant difference when you have 8-10 quarts contaminated. People ask why toyota and Lexus and most Japanese cars last so long. The biggest reason is the maintenance programs they are on. If you bought your car and want it trouble free for a few hundred thousand miles the best thing you can do is maintain it. I only say this because 4 of our loaner cars have about 250,000 miles on them with absolutely no trouble what so ever. We do not do any thing special we just maintain them. Every one has their own opinions and will offer them to you. I just speak from my own experience.
