Default cabin filter - which way?!

I was trying to replace the cabin/ac filter for my IS. However, i was a bit confused about which side should the filter be. either way is fine? should the flat part of the filter be on the bottom? (close to the fan) or, should the flat part of the filter face up?
thanks for helping

my ES cabin filter had an arrow printed on it that indicated the air flow direction, look for an arrow. Mine was black and printed on the side of one of the pleats of the filter material.

steviej is right. Here's an old pic of my current A/C filter (yeah I know, it will be replaced very soon)

You can clearly see the 'UP' arrow on the top left plastic flange of the filter piece.

thanks for the reply and the picture. i guess the place where i am really confused about is the direction of the filter itself - which way should i insert the filter into the plastic tray? ........

There is only one way to slide the filter piece into the tray (you will eventually figure it out). Plus, the "dirty" side of the filter is always on the side facing the engine (brief explanation: dirty, airborne particles from the outside get brought in through the A/C hoses and to the vents, with the filter "filtering" out those particles).

waldis, where is the filter located on an IS? my ES filter is located behind the glovebox. pre-02 ES cabin filters are up under the dash to the right of the gas pedal.
